Frequently (Un)answered Questions
You can get an STI if you are sexually active and have engaged in oral/anal/vaginal or genital touching. While symptoms may vary from individual to individual, most cases of STIs tend to be asymptomatic, and as a result, the only way to know for certain is to get tested.
Common Symptoms include:
- Any foul smelling, itchy, or blood-stained discharge from the vagina
- Pain or burning sensation while passing urine
- Lower belly pain or pain during vaginal penetration in woman
- Spotting/bleeding between periods in a woman
- Testicular or scrotal pain in men
- Swollen or painful lymph nodes, particularly in the groin area
- You should get tested at least once a year if you are sexually active. This is important even if you have been with the same partner for a while.
- You may need to test more frequently (between 2-4 times a year) if you have had multiple sexual partners, have shared needles or tattooing equipment, or have not followed safe sex practices such as using condoms.
- Lower belly pain or pain during vaginal penetration in woman
- A great rule of thumb is to get tested every time you switch partners. Get tested before you engage in any sexual activity with a new partner and encourage your partner to get tested also.
- All pregnant women should get tested early in pregnancy to prevent complications at a later stage and to also ensure that the infection is not passed on to the child.
